Higher Learning


Higher Learning is a drama movie that examines the personal, political, and racial dilemmas facing a group of college freshmen as they begin their first semester at Columbus University. It was released in 1995. Malik(Omar Epps) is a student who goes under a lot of stress because he tries to make all good grades in his class to keep his scholarship. He is interrupted by that by parties and a group of racist men who battle with him throughout the movie. Malik thought about dropping out of college because of stress. Remy(Michael Rapaport) on the other hand dealt with stress another way. He was a smart student but was influenced by other students to become racist.He knew that was not how he was raised so he committed suicide in the end because his life was being brought down because of stress.

Connection to the course

Higher Learning relates to psychology because we learned in Chapter 10 that stress is the cause of some humans illness. Stress is the process of adjusting to circumstances that disrupt, or threaten to disrupt, a person's daily functioning.Stressed caused the some students at Columbus University to have a downfall.
Dangerous Minds

Dangerous minds is a movie stars Michelle Pfeiffer as an ex-Marine turned English teacher. She is unknowingly thrown to a group of students. A class of trouble infested, educationally challenged, drug employed slum kids who get a kick out of driving teachers to nervous breakdowns. Michelle keeps them focused by teaching them that education is important. She gave them rewards such as a field trip to the amusement park for good behavior. She also gave her students candy for everytime they answered a question right in a disscusion in a class room. Another reward she offered was a free dinner to the students that got a project right to a certain topic she gave all her students to research on. Not all of her students got the free dinner reward.


Connection to the course

Dangerous Minds is a movie that was published in 1995. It relates to psychology because we learned in Chapter 5 about primary reinforcers which are events or stimuli such as food or water. The teacher gave her students candy and a dinner as a primary reinforcer.It also relates to the schedules of reinforcement because the students started learning new material and expected to get an reward everytime.
The Maury Show

The Maury Show is a talk show that is brodcasted Monday-Friday at 4:oopm. The show deals with people trying to find their biological father in most cases. They use what psychologist call a paternal test or a DNA test. The test is done from the mouth and the results are reported to the parents as soon as the results are in. In some cases the test come out positive meaning that the child belongs to the father. Sometimes the test comes out negative. This means that the DNA tested that the father is not the biological parent to the child/infant.


Connection to The Course

The Maury Show relates to psychology because in chapter 9 we discussed the term DNA(deoxyribonucleic acid) which is the molecular structure of a gene that provides the genetic code. Examples would be the blood type,inherited disorders and eye color.
Premonition

Linda Hanson has a beautiful house, a loving husband and two adorable daughters. Her life is perfect, until the day she receives the devastating news that her husband Jim has died in a car accident. When she wakes up the next morning to find him alive and well, she assumes it was all a dream, but is shaken by how vivid it felt. She soon realizes it wasn't a dream, and her world is turned upside down.She visualizes her husbands death.

Connection to the course

The movie Premonition was published in 2002. It ties in with Chapter 6. We discussed different types of memory. The memory that goes along with the movie is sematic codes which is mental representation of experiences by their general meaning. She took the sematic coding from her dream and tried to use it in real life. Her experiences tied it with what she thought she had dreamed about.
Insomnia


A dectective is asked to solve a crime of a 17yr. old girl that was murdered. The suspect calls him. He is forced into a psychological game of cat-and-mouse by the primary suspect, events escalate and the detective finds his own stability dangerously threatened. People start to question the detective is he ok because he hasen't been getting enough sleep. He has not had any sleep in 3 days. He washes his face with water to stay awake. The murder called him and told the detective he can sleep when he is dead. The suspect called him all times of the day when he tried to sleep. The detective is now terrified and threathed by the suspect.

Connection to the course

The movie insomnia is related to the course because as we discussed in Chapter 4 insomnia is a sleep disorder in which a person feels tired during the day because of trouble falling asleep or staying asleep at night. It is a common sleeping disorder that humans may experience.This sleeping disorder causes constant tossing and turning.
